This book has been such a life saver, quite literally. I've been suffering with headaches since 2000. My husband noticed that I would complain I wouldn't feel good after I ate. So I started doing research and found David Buchholz at Johns Hopkins. The young lady who wrote this book was one of his patients. He didn't send me home with a bunch of prescriptions to try. I loved that! Since people who suffer with migraines shouldn't eat a lot of things, Heidi really came up with a great cookbook that explains a little about why and how to make substitutions. I swear by this book. It gave me a great foundation to go by to start changing my life. I was in bed for 3 weeks one time just feeling so sick and groggy from all the meds I was on. Once I figured out how to eat I had my live back. I recommend this book and David Buccholz to everyone that says they suffer from migraines and haven't figured out why. It's the best thing that's happened to me and I hope it's the best thing that happens to you.Product details

MigraineFree Cooking! Heidi Gunderson 9780557213207 Books Reviews
This cookbook is kind of outdated. The list of foods allowed or not seemed confusing as other information online is conflicting. I haven't tried the recipes yet but perhaps I will eventually.
After reading up on "Heal Your Headache" and the restrictive diet, I knew I needed some good recipes to help find 'safe' foods to eat. I ordered this book along with Heal Your Headache. So far I've tried a few recipes and they are wonderful! Labor intensive, yes, but still worth it.
The only complaint I have about this book is how many starchy and sugary recipes are included. The more I read in other health books, the more I've found that sugar and starchy foods can also affect headaches immensely, and I'm now looking for additonal entree recipes involving less sugar and starch.
I still feel this cookbook is very valuable though and have enjoyed some great entrees such as chicken and biscuits and cream of chicken soup. Stick to the entree meals and swap in brown rice and whole grains and the recipes are amazing!
I absolutely love that there are alternative recipes for soy sauce, cream soups, broths, etc. Most of the recipes are easy and have ingredients commonly found in most everyone's refrigerator & cabinets. It's nice to have an entire recipe book that keeps me safe from migraines, although there are some with tomatoes (I'm not sure if those are triggers for me yet). The recipes are from scratch, so you know exactly what's in them. If a recipe has several different parts to it, the book directs you to each recipe you'll need within the book. I have not found any recipe to be hard, but if there's a several parts to it, it's a little time consuming, but completely rewarding, because they are excellent! I've tried the sugar cookies, meatballs, meatloaf, chicken pot pie(which includes a broth, cream of chicken, & pie crust recipe) all excellent!! I'm very happy with this book! Best of all it follows what I've learned from the book, "Heal Your Headache", by David Buchholz, M.D. I highly recommend BOTH books!! This recipe book is going to help me stick to the "Heal Your Headache" diet, & has a large variety of foods & recipes that I can eat without worry. There's also a large grocery list included near the beginning of the book which is VERY helpful. I'll be making copies of the grocery list to take to the store with me.
This cookbook is basically a dessert cookbook. If you are a migrainer that is not affected by sugar, go for it. If you are like me and must avoid sugar-save your time and money and do not buy this book. The beginning of the book was promising with background on the writers migraines but once the recipes started it was disappointing.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is following Dr. Buchholz's 1-2-3 Program for migraines. After I read the 1-2-3 Program book, I knew which foods to avoid, but had a hard time incorporating that into my favorite recipes and coming up with foods I COULD eat. This book is full of easy recipes and also has lots of great information besides the recipes such as lists of triggers (so I don't have to have both books out when I cook), lists of allowable foods, and cooking substitutions. There's a section called "Relearn How to Shop and Cook" which terrified me, but this book made that learning process very, very easy.
I like the recipes she gives but she gives general ingredients on many recipes without going into detail (can of soup, add water or not?)( Rinse out water from the can or add the whole can?) I did make the salsa and it turned out alright.
I like the title, Migraine Free Cooking, it tells it all. I also appreciate the size and the easy to turn pages.
Great buy for those trying to following a migraine prevention diet!
I just bought this cookbook after reading Buchholz' book "Heal Your Headache The 1-2-3 Program for Taking Charge of Your Pain". This book is based on the 1-2-3 Program and has significantly helped me with the new diet I've undertaken to eliminate food triggers and (hopefully) my migraines. I've suffered for 15 years and need relief! After realizing I needed to be on a strict diet for at least four months to 'prove' that many foods could actually be triggering my heachaches, I panicked because all of the recipes I'm used to cooking contained something I could not eat! Even the simplest entrees and sides had onions or a store bought package (containing MSG). This book has many simple recipes that eliminate all the food triggers mentioned in the 1-2-3 Program by Buchholz. Nothing fancy or overly hard to cook and I like that. The author has a great website and blog as well, both have been very helpful. I am only 3 weeks into my program, so I can't really make any profound statements on if it's helping with headaches or not, but I'm hopeful and this book is full of tasty recipes and even some new ideas for me. I didn't think I could live without chocolate, but there are some great desserts I've tried without it!
